BRUNT.— Maureen - 26.12.1928 - 30.01.2019

Monash University is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Emeritus Professor Maureen Brunt, AO, on January 30th, 2019, aged 90 years.

Professor Brunt was appointed Foundation Chair of Economics at Monash in 1967, making her the University’s first female professor. Throughout her career, she worked tirelessly at the interface between Economics and Law. She produced pioneering studies on the industrial organisation of the Australian economy, revealing the need for the establishment of competition law in Australia. She greatly influenced economic and legal schools of thought and left a lasting impact on laws and economic policies in Australia and New Zealand. Today, her work continues to be referenced by practitioners and academics in law and economics in both countries.

Professor Brunt was born in Coburg. Her parents, both grocers, were determined that she should be well-educated, her mother particularly so. She did not intentionally set out to shatter any glass ceilings, but her stellar career has left a lasting legacy. She was the third woman to hold a Professorial Chair in Australia and the first one to do so in the field of economics.

In 1992, Professor Brunt was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for services to the Trade Practices Tribunal and to education and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws from Monash University in 1996. In 2000, upon her retirement from Monash, she was appointed Emeritus Professor.

The Monash University community acknowledges with great gratitude the life and work of this pioneering academic, and offers its sincere sympathy to Emeritus Professor Maureen Brunt’s family, and friends.

Professor Margaret Gardner, AO, President and Vice-Chancellor.
