A firefighter and Ergon Energy worker inspect the damaged power pole on West Street.

A POWER pole on busy West Street was split vertically in half about 8am today, causing major traffic disruption.

Toowoomba City Station officer Tim Connolly said a truck had struck the pole, but neither the vehicle nor the driver were on scene when emergency services arrived.

It is believed the driver fled the immediate scene and stopped the truck around the corner where a passer-by recorded its registration details.

Mr Connolly expects there will be long power outages and partial road closures today as Ergon Energy crews repair the damage.
