16th July 2009

WE want this website to be the best online source for local news and information in the area, but we need your support.

To help us improve the website, please tell us what you think of the website (the good and the bad) and what we can do to make the site better by leaving a comment below

Here are some questions to get you started:

Why do you visit the site?  What makes you come back?

Are there features you see on other sites that you feel are missing from our site?  If so, what are they?

Do you like the content you see on our homepage?  If not, what else would you like to see?

How do you find the balance of local, state, national and world news coverage?

Are we providing the best sports coverage for your area?  Would you prefer if we just focused on local sport or do you like a broader mix of national and world coverage? Are there other areas you would like to see more of, such as AFL?

Within our Money section, would you prefer to see more coverage around Personal Finance or Business and Investing?

Are there other types of content that you would like to see more of, like Fashion?

Do you ever use your mobile phone to access local news or other local information?  Do you use your phone for paid SMS?  Can you tell us of any information or services that you’d like to get on your mobile phone that aren’t currently available on your phone or in your area?

Your comments on any of these questions or any other suggestions you may have about our website are extremely helpful as we work to improve the site for you, so please tell us what you think.

I only visit your website because of http://microblog.ourcoffs.org.au/coff...
Would be better if I you had tags like the abc.net.au site or even local/national/internatinal feeds so I could filter your news.
otherwise its all pretty good. thx

I read all my news online. The site has been improved a lot, good to see it being updated regularly now. I'd really like to see a local "what's on" section or gig guide. And the letters page.

No regular updates.
No attempt at complete coverage of local news.
No letters coverage.
No good!!!

the website is very easy to navigate.

However if you want more people to participate & leave comments, it is a real pain to have to register. Besides not everyone that goes online has a web address.

If a person registers, they can still provide false email addresses & information about where they live, etc.

As a previous resident of the area, I would like the daily funeral notices to appear on the website. Is this possible?

By BrokeAnt6 on 20/7/2009 at 2:06PM Suggest removal

Too much open space. I would like to see a more condensed version with two columns of news headings with top stories below each heading for faster navigation. Clicking on the new tabs or the news heading would take the reader to more stories in that heading. Again there is too much open space when opening each category and too much scrolling needed.

One interesting idea would be to add a forum so that ideas of community interest could be discussed. There are many passionate people here about the many common problems we have on the coast (ie bypass) and it would be a great place to discuss ideas. The best of the forum could be printed weekly in the paper. This would allow your readers to interact with your newspaper.

I have asked this question many times before - why do death and funeral notices not appear in the classified anymore. Please could these notices be added in future.

By thedaily_Evelyn on 22/7/2009 at 8:00PM Suggest removal

As with some of the comments here I would also like to see the funeral notices. They used to be there on the old site and when they disappeared I emailed several times asking about this. A lot more of the local classifieds information and local news would also be good.

Like a lot of others making comments, I am a former long term Northern Rivers resident who read the "Star" for some 50 years or more before moving interstate. I have previously requested on numerous occasions to have the death and funeral notices appear daily on the web site but my requests have to date "fallen on deaf ears." All that seem to appear in the notices are death and funeral notices for the Toowoomba Chronicle area. Like others before me, I ask you to please rectify this ASAP thanks. The rest of the new site appears to be a big improvement!

Lipstick on a pig -- though the lipstick itself isn't bad.

The Northern Star has gone down the toilet in the past year or two. As if we needed yet another trashy tabloid full of bogan news in this country.

I visit the site rarely, and then only to look (with little success) for more details on local news that I find elsewhere: on news sites from ABC, SBS, BBC, PBS, and the Northern Rivers Echo.

Don't like my answer? Then you shouldn't have asked the question.

More local news & coverage please.

I cannot understand why death and funeral notices are not published. This is of extreme interest to ex residents such as myself. I have suggested this several times to the editor via email, without acknowledgement or action.

It can't be that hard, can it?

I regularly use the Website and have appreciated the recent improvements which enable me to keep up with the Clarence. I believe the addition of the Letters page would further improve the site. Although I hadn't personally thought about it I would support those suggesting the inclusion of births, and death notification.

New website pretty good. Enjoy the photo clips.
Still missing the death and funeral notices. They were in your original site but not anymore. Have sent emails and made phone calls but to no avail. Both notices are available in your sister papers but not the Examiner. Why not?? People move out of Grafton but Grafton does not necessarily move out of the people.

I like the local news content of the Tweed Daily site, along with the decent size pictures that are displayed on the website. And the journo's don't appear to oversensationalise stories and headlines like papers from just up the coast.

Also everything downloads on my dial-up relatively quickly unlike some of the other papers that I read.

Well done!

Total agree with this , we have no notices for mackay at all, and this is a must if you want this site for local people.

Great to see the Star is online, now I can catch up without having to wait till it is delivered late Wednesday afternoon. It is nice to see all the extra content added. I have made this my homepage.

I would like to see notices and letters to the editor included

Quite a substandard register procedure. Most folk know their adresses so it is very frustrating when one is kicked back to the start because it does not tally with some resource at your end. Please get rid of that and just accept that folk know where they live.

Some of the advanced websites such as Tesselaar Nurseries do not ask you to repeat your email address they just ask for confirmation that the address is correct. One click instead of a lot.

I tried to find a "contact us" field. I failed. Not good! It may be there but I gave up looking after some minutes.

The website is getting better than it was, but still pretty lame for a newspaper.

Using a spell checker and proof reading would make it readable, and speed up the slow loading times of pages

The website has improved out of sight, but do you have a suggestion box! If so I can't find it! I'd really like to see a poll on "Who would like to see the controversial "Slade Campus" sold" this is of great interest to many, it would solve the possible pipeline lack of funds for Stanthorpe if this white elephant (which I might add is costing rate payers in excess of $80,000 p/y) was rid of once and for all! A poll to gauge this issue would allow rate payers to finally be heard regarding this waste of rate payers money injustice!

I would like Letters to the Editor - one of the most entertaining parts of the paper, if not THE most entertaining part of the paper.

By shellyn on 7/9/2009 at 7:34AM Suggest removal

Your letters page has always been the best in the region - provocative, honest and great reading. Such a change from the dreary old Advocate and Northern Star!
What possible reason can you have for omitting it from your new website???? I live in East Ballina and you don't deliver here - the website is my only direct access. Now I'm warning you - If you don't reinstate the letters you'll get no more brilliant, incisive, well-written and amusing letters from this contributor!

wanted to read a funeral notice on Saturday's new mail 10/10/09 but unable to find any of these, hard to navigate for the right notice

I add my name to the growing list of people who miss the Death and Funeral notices which used to be included in your earlier website. I may have left Rockhampton, but I still have relatives and friends there.
