Window dressing with artistic flair
Kate Lemmon 14th July 2009
ARTtime owner Kate Roberts is undertaking Works in the Window at her Brisbane Street Shop which will allow people to check out art as it is created.
A CHANCE to see artists in action will be made possible in the coming weeks through an innovative program at ARTtime at the Top of Town.
Artists will be on public view in the window of the store illustrating their creative talents in a variety of media including mixed media, acrylics and water colours.
The four-week showcase will take place on weekend mornings and has been designed to inspire shoppers and visitors to take up artistic pursuits.
ARTtime owner Kate Roberts said the idea was based on a simple concept which would allow people to see an artist at work.
“The idea is basically that the public will be able to see us working away and can ask questions about what we're doing,” Ms Roberts said.
“I believe that demystifying the artistic process, making it accessible and real, means that more people may discover their artist within and be inspired to begin their own creative journey.
“So for four weeks, on both Friday and Saturday mornings from 10am to midday the front window will exhibit one of three Works in the Window artists, each working with different styles and mediums.
“Featured artists will be myself working with mixed media and acrylics on July 10 and 11, Tracy Gordon using watercolours on July 17 and 18, Sharon Harper-Greentree using acrylics on July 24 and 25 and then myself again on July 31 and August 1.”
Both Ms Gordon and Ms Harper-Greentree are teachers at the shop, in watercolours and acrylics respectively.
Classes were held earlier in the year and will start up again in about two weeks.
Ms Robert's style of using mixed media means she uses a host of art mediums to create a final masterpiece.
Techniques used include gouache, a non-transparent French-style water colour, conte crayons and coloured pencils.
Visitors are also encouraged to take some time to explore the Drawing Point Gallery and Studio which can be accessed through the store.
“We are currently hosting the Alla Prima exhibition featuring textile and felt artists Annamaria Mays and Mieke den Otter,” Ms Roberts said.
“When the Works in the Window display is finished my pieces will be for sale.”
ARTtime is at 203 Brisbane Street.
