Crash leaves elderly scooter driver in coma
Josephine Gillespie 7th January 2009
AN ELDERLY man is in a coma after being knocked off his motorised scooter yesterday afternoon.
The 77-year-old North Booval man was hit while trying to cross at the intersection of Limestone and Milford streets about 1.10pm.
Senior Sergeant John McCrae said while there had been a few “reasonable accidents” at the intersection, it was no worse than any other street.
“Unfortunately you don't expect to see a scooter in the middle of a busy road like this one,” Snr Sgt McCrae said.
“They're normally on the footpath or crossing at a pedestrian crossing.”
The vehicle and scooter were seized pending further police investigation.
The man was treated for cuts to his head and back pain at the scene.
He was taken to Ipswich Hospital where he later suffered a seizure.
An Ipswich Hospital spokeswoman said the man was then transferred to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Nearby resident Marc Robinson was not surprised to hear of another accident at the intersection.
“I heard a screech, then a bang and then a second later a softer bang, which was obviously him hitting the ground,” Mr Robinson said.
Mr Robinson said he had 20 years worth of photos of every accident at the intersection.
He said it was a notorious street where all the hoons did their laps. “He had hearing aids in both ears and where he was lying one was about eight feet away,” Mr Robinson said.
“He must have been hit fairly hard for it to go that far.”
