COFFS HARBOUR residents will be doing their bit to mark today's annual International Day of People With a Disability (IDPWD).

A static display showcasing the achievements of people with disabilities living in our community will be on exhibition today at the Chill Out Café at the Community Village.

A Come and Try Sports/Fun Day will be held at Sportz Central on Friday, beginning with a march-past at 10.15am by local schoolchildren.

The Coffs Harbour Access Advisory Committee's annual award for accessibility and service provision for people with a disability will be presented at the fun day.

“IDPWD is a unique community awareness event. It is not only about raising awareness about issues related to disabilities, but more importantly, it's about celebrating the abilities of people with disabilities,” Coffs Harbour City councillor John Arkan said.

“The day is also about changing misconceptions surrounding disability and creating an environment that encourages everyone's participation in careers, leisure activities and social networks.”

You are invited to attend the awards ceremony, which will be followed by a morning tea.

The awards will be presented at Sportz Central on Friday at 10.15am, following the march-past and a recital by the Tarnished Brass Quintet, in conjunction with the Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium.
