JAMIE McNulty's devastated parents Paul and Ellana were left wondering about our legal system after yesterday's court proceedings.

“I am literally gutted,” a tearful Mrs McNulty said after Judge Devereaux brought down his ruling.

“There is nothing for the boys now,” she said of youngest son Jamie, 18, and his mate Marcus MacDonald, 19, both of whom perished in the tragedy.

“This (the court case) is the last thing we could have done for the boys.”

Mr McNulty found it hard to come to terms with the court system which he believed had let the families down.

“We were just looking for a bit of justice so we could say it wasn't an accident,” he said.

“He (Alexander Corlis) walks free and now he can go and tell everyone it was an accident.

“But driving at 150kmh is not an accident.

“He was showing off.

“We knew what he did, the judge knew what he did, the defence knew what he did.

“But the system was not able to prove it, and two boys are dead and he (Corlis) doesn't pay anything.

“We always hoped for justice and thought that the truth would come out, but the truth didn't come out today.”

Mr and Mrs McNulty lament the potential lost in the death of their son, an OP4 student of Toowoomba Grammar who had been accepted into university to study engineering before his untimely death.

“Jamie was bright and had a bright future,” Mr McNulty said.

“He was not an accident waiting to happen.”
