Bellingen celebrated National Adoption Awareness Week.

The Coffs Coast Advocate

AUSTRALIA'S first National Adoption Awareness Week was celebrated last week in Bellingen.

During the week there were talks at Bellingen Public School with the specific aim of educating children and dispelling some of the myths surrounding adoption.

The week culminated with a picnic at Bellingen's Jarrett Park on Sunday where both adopted children and adults gathered to celebrate adoption.

The park was decorated with white balloons and a huge chocolate cake with the words 'Adopted Kids R Cool' was cut by the children who were from Taiwan, Thailand, China, Ethiopia, the Phillipines and Australia.

It was decided that this would be an annual event in Bellingen.

There is also a gathering approximately four times a year in Coffs Harbour, with the next one being on the December 7 at Park Beach Reserve next to the Surf Club car park beginning at noon.

Inquiries to Michelle Childs, phone 6654 3773.
