Mackay men forced to sell high-performance cars

BRIAN Armstrong is among a growing number of young men selling their high-performance cars in the Daily Mercury Classifieds as they prace for any impacts of the global financial crisis.

IF you're in the market for a high-performance car, now is the perfect time to buy.

Young Mackay men are selling their beloved toys as they brace for any impacts of the global financial crisis.

Gordi's bar worker Brian Armstrong bought his Holden VZ SS Thunder limited edition V8 ute for $55,000 around 18 months ago.

Today he's selling it in the Daily Mercury Classifieds for just $39,000 and he's not alone, with the section full of high-performance vehicles and boats up for sale.

“It's a dream car with 19-inch chrome wheels, full leather interior, dual exhaust, tray liner, tinted windows and lowered,” he said.

“I am loathe to sell it but can't really justify keeping it.”

Mr Armstrong said the money from the sale would go towards paying off his credit cards in case work dried up.

“It's only done 7000km so whoever buys it will get themselves a good deal,” he said.

Mackay-based McKays Solicitors managing partner Scott McSwan said businesses also were preparing for the eye of the financial storm.

“We have noticed an increased level of requests by business clients for legal services dealing with debt collection,” he said.

“A lot of businesses are no longer wanting to carry extra debt. They want to be paid.”

Roger Mendelson, the chief executive officer of Prushka Debt Collection, which services the Mackay region, said they had seen a similar trend.

“Across the board we have had more judgements against companies this week than any other,” he said.

“The action has been against wholesalers, builders and shops.

“No-one wants to wait for money.

“We are finding business is still strong but goodwill is gone.”
