CHRISTMAS light displays are going up across Toowoomba and Ergon Energy is urging residents to be conscious of electrical safety and consider the environment as the festive season approaches.

Ergon Energy General Manager Operations Dave Heberlein said the incorrect use of festive lighting and overloaded electrical circuits could contribute to electrical accidents.

Mr Heberlein said as Queensland's regional electricity supplier, Ergon Energy is involved in numerous community-based activities across the region to help celebrate the spirit of Christmas.

“Christmas is a wonderful time of year. It's an opportunity for the community to come together in celebration, but we need to be conscious of how important it is to ensure that Christmas lights and equipment are in safe working order.”

Ergon Energy is urging residents to have equipment such as festive lighting and leads checked thoroughly by a qualified electrician to ensure correct and safe operation.

As an additional safeguard, Ergon Energy recommends an approved safety switch be fitted to all Christmas lighting installations.
