HIGHFIELDS McDonald's restaurant will be one of the first to sport the company's new modern design when it opens at the end of the year.
Developer Lauder Pty Ltd managing director Mac Stirling said the steel frame of the building had been erected and work on the exterior cladding, sewerage works and the retaining walls is under way.
“Depending on the weather, we could open earlier, but so far we believe it will be in operation by the end of 2008,” Mr Stirling said.
“McDonald's are moving away from the American-type design and evolving more like the McCafe design.
“This is definitely one of the first of the modern designs.”
Mr Stirling, who also owns the Highfields Village, said the Toowoomba Regional Council had approved development for a second family restaurant.
“At this stage it is undecided which restaurant it is going to be, but it is planned for some time in 2009,” he said.
Earlier this year, the restaurant was the centre of controversy for being so close to a school.
Mr Stirling said they had also had meetings with the Mary McKillop School and the P&F and came to an agreement on many issues.
