Qld warned of tough storm season
19th October 2008
QUEENSLANDERS have been warned to prepare for a possible repeat of last summer's tumultuous storm season.
Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts on Sunday morning launched the State Emergency Service's storm season campaign, and warned residents to be prepared for the worst this year.
"The Bureau of Meteorology is saying that, although the risk is not as high, they are not ruling out the possibility of the similar sort of storm season to what we experienced late last year and earlier this year," he said.
"That means potentially a lot of heavy rain and thunderstorms so we are just reminding people to take some basic precautions."
Mr Roberts said residents should take measures such as cleaning gutters, trimming overhanging branches and securing loose items to limit the impact of storms.
He also reminded people to be careful when dealing with floodwaters, which killed three people last summer.
"It is really important for people not to drive through or wade through flooded causeways or drains, and in particular it is important for parents to keep an eye on kids."
