JOHN Riedel hopes opening his first art exhibition at 60-years-old will inspire others to achieve what they might have been putting off for a while.
The Toowoomba man has opened Enough Said at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.
Mr Riedel has always loved art and remembers winning the J.J. Hilder Award in 1957 and 1958 when he was at Toowoomba North State School.
Jesse Jewhurst Hilder was a successful watercolourist who had attended the school in the 1880s.
But after all this time, Mr Riedel only picked up a paintbrush about two years ago.
“I was encouraged to hold an exhibition by some people who have some influence on me and have an understanding of galleries and art. Then it became something for me to achieve,” he said.
Mr Riedel has been influenced by many sources including Japanese screening, art using hard objects and items floating in undefined spaces.
He also has very interesting ways of using his titles in his work.
“The text of those titles actually appear in the picture and the pictures are readable if you know how to decode the letters or bits of letters,” he said.
Mr Riedel hopes to inspire others.
“I hope it will encourage older people to start to do what they might have been thinking of doing for a while,” he said.
The exhibition runs until November 2.
