Potato Festival a red hot success
- 7th October 2008
WHAT a day!
Saturday's inaugural DorrigoPotato Festival clearly hit the spot for locals and visitors alike withthe town's main street crowded for much of Saturday.
“It went great - everything went smoothly and according to plan,” co-organiser and long-time potato grower Carol Beaumont said.
“There were so many people - especially for the Grand Parade.”
Estimating numbers at about 1500 at its height, Mrs Beaumont said she was relieved and happy the event was such a success.
“I'm sure we'll do it again but maybe only every second year.”
Highlightswere the grand parade, which featured vintage potato harvesters and wasled by well-known potato picker Jack McGuire, the potato bag fashionparade, the potato iron man and woman event and the Big Potato ChipDrop, thanks to Terry Walker and his helicopter.
Dorrigo-born Joyce Darley entered the fashion parade along with her two grandchildren.
“It's so good to see the town getting behind this,” Mrs Darley said.
“But I hope they hurry up with the judging before we cook.”
The festival was in celebration of the International Year of the Potato.
