Festival to evolve under the big tops | National News

EVOLVE organisers can breathe a sigh of relief with Byron Shire Council granting formal approval for the Byron Bay festival to go ahead next weekend.

Although confident it would be approved, director Stuart Hucker said he was nevertheless relieved at the news.

“I just had to resubmit the parking plan and did that last Thursday. They worked on it and we had our approval on Monday,” he said. “I was pretty confident, but having planning consultants work on the development application was definitely an assurance.

“We start tomorrow marking the site to see how it all fits in and the production crews turn up on Sunday ready to put tents up on Monday.”

The inaugural arts and music festival is on tomorrow week and features performers, art, music and film under three big tops at Red Devil Park.

Mr Hucker described the event as family friendly.

Entry is free for accompanied children under 12 and there will be a child-safe area set up so parents can enjoy the entertainment.

The festival will also launch the 2009 Byron Bay Art Diary.

The line-up includes Tex Perkins with James Cruickshank, Tripod, the Byron Ballet Company and Emily Burke, of Opera Queensland.
