Carnival of Flowers clivias on display

KEVIN Larsen believes that although clivias are one of Australia's most popular flowering plants, most people don't realise that they come in a range of colours and flower forms.

The president of the Toowoomba Clivia Society says most people only know about orange-coloured clivias.

“But they are also available in other colours from beautiful soft cream and lemon yellow and peach to vibrant apricots, oranges and even red,” Mr Larsen said.

Although clivias originated in South Africa, many new hybrids are being developed by breeders there and in Germany, Holland, Belgium, Japan and China.

The society's clivia show at TAFE in Lindsay Street is open until tomorrow. A similar show at the Wilsonton Shopping Centre in Bridge Street will also end tomorrow.

Also on display at TAFE is a fascinating exhibition of beautiful Australian native flowering plants.

Experts are on hand to offer information and advice to gardeners about growing these drought-hardy plants.

Another delight for visitors to the Carnival of Flowers this week is live music in Laurel Bank Park, Queens Park and Picnic Point Park from 11am to 3pm each day until Sunday - perfect settings for a picnic lunch on the lawn among thousands of gorgeous spring blooms.

For those who love to work with their hands or just admire the skill of those who do, creations in clay, glass and wool are on display in the Spring Pottery exhibition at the Potters' Gallery in West Street.

On show are handmade pieces including ceramic artworks, household items like mugs, jugs and vases, slumped glass bowls and platters, paintings, jewellery and felted wool creations.

Other art and craft exhibitions on this week include It's About Time and Space and Progressions - Juried Art Quilt exhibition, both at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery in Ruthven Street, as well as the Tiffany Shafran exhibition at the on-campus USQ Arts Gallery in West Street.
