Smoke may not mean fire

DON'T be alarmed if you see smoke coming from openings in your yard, as Bellingen Shire Council conducts smoke testing this month.
Council has begun infiltration testing of the sewer network and contractors will be travelling around Dorrigo, Bellingen and Urunga pumping smoke down sewer manholes for the next four weeks.
The contractors are looking for smoke escaping from the network and may have to enter house yards to access manholes and other sewer assets.
A spokesman for Bellingen Shire Council said the testing is important.
“At the present there is a lot of water entering the sewer network during rain events,” the spokesman said.
“This has an effect on the performance of the sewerage treatment plants and the lower the infiltration, the lower the cost of treating the sewage and the better the quality of the effluent.”
All local fire brigades have been notified of the procedure.
