Fishing season shaping up
- 4th September 2008
SPRING is here and the fishing has been good both locally and at the coast. It is shaping up to be a top spring and summer season.
GLENLYON DAM: A couple of cod were taken at Glenlyon on Tuesday while trolling lures (spinnerbaits and Oar-Gee plow) with fish up to 15lb. A few yellowbelly were also taken last weekend, mainly on live bait and the odd one on lures.
PHOTO COMPETITION: The current photo competition finishes this weekend with the draw on Monday morning, so get your photo into Mullet Gut Marine in Ruthven Street to be in the draw to win a Shimano rod and reel valued at $70.
ST GEORGE: The fishing around St George has been hard work, however there have been a few small cod taken upstream on bait but the yellowbelly are in hiding.
CLOSED SEASON: The closed season for Murray cod in the border rivers - Barwon, Mcintyre and Dumaresq - is now in force until November 30 but remains unchanged in other rivers and impoundments.
COOBY DAM: A few reasonable yellowbelly have been on the bite at Cooby, mainly on live bait. A few have also been taken on lures both from the bank and boats. A couple of under-size cod have been caught and released.
SUMMER TIMES: The summer operating times are now in force for both Cooby Dam (7am-8pm) and Cressbrook Dam (6am-8pm) which makes for some good fishing in the late afternoon and evening.
LESLIE DAM: Some reasonable yellowbelly and a couple under size (released) were taken last weekend on live worms and shrimp. Trolling the Oar-Gee Wee Pee lures was also successful.
TEXAS: A few yellowbelly have been taken upstream of Bonshaw Weir on live bait and spinnerbaits. A couple under size were mixed in with them so make sure you check the minimum length of 30 centimetres for yellowbelly.
CRESSBROOK DAM: The late afternoons at Cressbrook have produced some reasonable bass (up to 43cm) using the Zip 'N' Ziggy surface lures along with some on live worms around the edge of the weed banks during the day.
BOONDOOMA DAM: Some good quality yellowbelly have been taken at Boondooma Dam this week but you have to work for them using live shrimp and spinnerbait.
CALOUNDRA: Plenty of flathead have been on the move in the passage at Caloundra with soft plastics producing good results. There has also been an increase in whiting numbers in the passage and Coochin Creek.
TWEED RIVER: The flathead numbers have been good over the past week throughout the river. Some nice bream are being taken off the rock walls at the mouth and behind the hospital.
NOOSA: A few cobia and snapper have been about offshore but the wind may put a stop to that over the next few days. Plenty of tailor have been taken along the beach north of Teewah and plenty of flathead and whiting are starting to show up in the lower reaches of the river.
SOUTHPORT: The broadwater and Nerang River areas are starting to produce good whiting numbers. The flathead have been good off the Seaway and around Sovereign and Crab Islands. The Pin and Seaway also produced trevally and tailor.
MAROOCHY RIVER: The mouth and Bli Bli reaches produced reasonable flathead while the cod hole produced chopper tailor and bream at night. A few tailor have also been taken along the North Shore at night.
FRASER ISLAND: Plenty of tailor and big bream have been taken in most gutters and so far there are no weed problems. It looks like being one of the best seasons for some time.
