Coolum students celebrate Wakakirri success.
COOLUM Primary School students came home with the lion's share of the prizes at the Wakakirri National Story Festival.
Of the four major awards given out on the night, the Coolum students got three: grand final public speaking, best school in public, most creative re-use of materials to make sets, props or costumes.
They also won five gold awards (story dance, sets and props, entertainment, overall presentation and artistic achievement) and five silver awards (music, costumes, teamwork, sustainability and story).
Wakakirri coordinator Michelle Hewison said school principal Pat Cavanagh and the parents were "overwhelmed with pride" on the night and the students relished in knowing they had been the best.
"I personally was very proud and a little shocked at how many awards we did receive on the night," Ms Hewison said.
"I knew they were good but I thought I was being biased. Obviously not, looking at all the commendations the school received."
Mr Cavanagh said Coolum was the last school to appear on the night and it was as though they were destined for a grand finale performance.
"They just blew the whole show away," he said.
A cast of 65 Coolum Primary School students, ranging from grades four to seven, took part in Wakakirri, which aims "to promote sustainable environmental practices through performing and creative arts".
