I deli do!

  • 7th August 2008

Dale Pengelly, one of the stars of the musical, Shout, proposed to his girlfriend Coyne Mahoney in Buderim Deli.

Sunshine Coast Daily/Cade Mooney

COYNE Mahoney of Buderim was expecting a "thirty-something" birthday celebration yesterday.

She got that - and a whole lot more, when her partner Dale Pengelly popped the big question at precisely 1.15pm at the Buderim Deli.

And the big answer was .... yes!

Dale, set to perform as the late Johnny O'Keefe in the Coast musical Shout!, which opens at Caloundra Events Centre in September, took centre stage in Mark Neubauer's King Street deli as he got down on one knee to ask for Coyne's hand, his partner of three years, as her friends and family surrounded the couple.

Dale had worked things out ahead of time with Mark to ensure everyone was present, including Coyne's four-year-old daughter Rory.

And Mark had tipped the Daily off for us to capture the magic moment as the ring slid effortlessly onto Coyne's finger, and forever record that huge moment.

See how the proposal unfolded...

"I had hoped to propose earlier this year," Dale said.

"I had the Eiffel Tower in mind."

As for Coyne, a sales executive with Cleanaway and also from Buderim, she was "completely surprised" - and thrilled.

"I'm to be married before I'm 40 - just," she laughed.

"It used to be 'I'll be married before I'm 25'."

Dale joked he was "thrilled to have a child-bride".

And he was equally thrilled not only that Coyne accepted his proposal, but he would also be a father for young Rory.

"I'm the adopted dad," he said.

Coyne, meanwhile, was still stunned.

"This morning I woke up a 'Miss' - tonight I'll go to bed a 'Ms'," she quipped.
