SEVEN Toowoomba poker players will try their hand at winning a share of $1 million in Sydney.

Thousands will compete in the Australian Poker League Tournament of Champions - a three-day extravaganza which starts tomorrow.

APL Toowoomba director Mitch Wood said Rodney Davidson from New South Wales won $300,000 for first place last year after qualifying at a free poker event in Bega.

“Before the tournament, Rodney had only $20 in the bank and had to borrow the money for his train fare to get to the event,” he said.

“This rags to riches story can inspire people from all regions to play poker.”

The Toowoomba qualifiers had to win a ticket into the Ashes Tournament before winning a ticket to the tournament in Sydney.

“Qualifiers include husband and wife duo Trevor and Vickie Stead who love free poker as well as 'Diamond' Tim Dunham,” Mr Wood said.

“Other Toowoomba entrants include Brett French, John Rush, Robert McKeon and Brad Mear.”

Mr Wood said people wanting to learn or test out their skills, can visit www.playapl.com for poker locations in Toowoomba.
