Be the idol of local families

Practising for the Family Idol competition at September's Fatherhood Festival are Federal family Kia McHugh, 4, mum Amanda and dad Mick.
FOUR-year-old Kia McHugh took to the stage at the Byron Bay Services Club and pulled off a rousing rendition of the Johnny Cash classic Ring of Fire. The judges were impressed and she is now through to the final of the Family Idol competition being held at this year's Fatherhood Festival.
Kia, from Federal, was ably supported by her dad Mick on the ukulele and her mum Amanda on the tambourine.
“Coming from Ireland, the kids are all heavily involved in music and it's such a positive thing,” Kia's dad said.
Mr McHugh is also a volunteer with the Fatherhood Festival and said the competition wasn't about finding a star, but promoting families doing things together rather than just watching TV. Further heats will be held across the region over the next four weeks, with two families from each heat going through to the final.
Mr McHugh is encouraging everyone to get involved.
“It can be any kind of performance, as long as you do it as a family,” he said.
Another Irishman, former Australian Idol winner Damien Leith, will be the judge of the final to be held in Bangalow on September 7.
As well as judging the Family Idol final, Mr Leith will be performing as part of the Fatherhood Festival concert at the A&I Hall on September 6, along with blues and roots guitar virtuoso Jeff Lang.
Other festival highlights include psychologist and author Steve Biddulph, speaking at Byron Bay High School on September 5, and a game show called The Testosterone Factor, which will explore issues of teenage sexuality.
