THE Chronicle Garden Competition is on again and this year there is a new class honouring grand champion gardener Margaret Timbs.

The Design Concept Award is judged on a nominated part of an entrant's garden for the most effective, significant or innovative concept.

The winner will receive the Margaret Timbs Design Concept Award trophy, entry to 10 Australian Open Garden Scheme gardens and entry to the next Leafmore Garden Society Winter Garden School.

The Chronicle's events co-ordinator Kay Pimm said Mrs Timbs' family created the award to honour their mother.

“She loved gardening and designing gardens so it was a perfect choice for honouring her,” Mrs Pimm said.

As well as this new class there are all the favourites, like Grand Champion Garden, Novice Garden and Australian Native Garden, as well as the New Vogue Garden and the Garden Suitable to Drought Conditions sections introduced in recent years.

Mrs Pimm said all the gardeners she had spoken to were excited about this year's competition and had adapted to the drought well.

“They are all very conscious of the drought and they have made allowances for it,” she said.

“They all have their own water tanks. The elements have been kind this year.”

Entry forms are available in The Chronicle and entries close this Friday at 5pm.

Judging for the city garden competition will run from Monday, September 8 until Thursday, September 11 and country judging will be from Friday, September 5 until Thursday, September 11.

The Chronicle Garden Competition is sponsored by Heritage Building Society and Toowoomba Regional Council.
