WE can all remember the sheer exhilaration of skipping down a path when we were young.

So you can imagine the joy on the faces of 40 kids at Lismore Public School yesterday, skipping for three minutes without stopping in a fundraising Guinness World Record attempt.

Out of the eight to 11 year olds who took part yesterday, 21 managed to complete the three-minute challenge, a tremendous effort and a credit to their teacher, Kerry St George.

The challenge was a popular spectator sport with younger pupils sitting on the sidelines, enjoying their play lunches and cheering on their friends.

Venues around Australia took part in the world record attempt at 11.30am. It was part of the Heart Foundation's Jump Rope for Heart 25th anniversary celebrations.

Ms St George said she had been really impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication of her pupils, who practised twice or three times a week including before school to prepare for the event.
 
Yesterday's challenge required the presence of official witnesses Lismore City councillor Jenny Dowell and Uniting Church Minister the Reverend Roy Cowin.

Cr Dowell even donned her sports shoes and kept the children company for the final minute.

Nine-year old Adriana Munro skipped for the full three minutes with her ponytail bobbing. She had a huge smile on her face when she finished.

"I'm not even exhausted, I could do it again!" she said.
