Catholic school teachers to strike

18th March 2010

CATHOLIC school teachers from more than 30 schools in the Toowoomba diocese will strike next Wednesday, March 24.

The industrial action is part of the teachers’ fight for fair pay.

Teachers are also withdrawing from co-curricular activities from that date indefinitely.

Independent Education Union of Australia — Queensland and Northern Territory Branch (IEUA-QNT) branch secretary Terry Burke said it was time for Catholic employers to settle this issue by showing some leadership.

"These negotiations have now been going on for more than 12 months and it is time Catholic employers return to the negotiating table with another revised wage offer that would see employees receive interstate benchmark rates of pay," Mr Burke said.

"Taking industrial action again is an absolute last resort but members have had no choice and will not and should not have to accept a mediocre wage deal."

Meetings and rallies have been organised as part of next week’s day of action.
