SUNSHINE Coast police have busted another hinterland drug network in a weekend operation in which narcotics worth more than $70,000 were seized.

Twenty-two people were arrested on more than 50 charges in the three-day operation which targeted Maleny, Kenilworth and Conondale.

The raid came less than a month after a large commercial laboratory was discovered in the hinterland area of Eudlo.

Police said there was no link between the offenders.

A 43-year-old Moy Pocket man was arrested on several charges, including production of a dangerous drug, after he was allegedly found in possession of 24 mature cannabis plants, some of which were more than two metres tall.

Police claim a search warrant on the man’s address also uncovered 100 grams of seeds, dried cannabis and utensils.

He will appear in Maroochydore Magistrates Court on April 13.

Police charged a 39-year-old Obi Obi man after he was allegedly found in possession of a jam jar full of “magic mushrooms”.

He will appear in court on May 20.

Sunshine Coast police superintendent Ben Hanbidge said the hinterland provided “excellent” growing conditions for a lot of cannabis.

“A lot of our raids conducted in that area are the focus of targeting specifically producers of cannabis,” Supt Hanbidge said. “We are consistently targeting the growing of cannabis and the various commercial outlets responsible for providing hydroponic equipment to persons involved in illegal drug operations.”

Supt Hanbidge said the weekend police raids, which were part of long-term taskforce operations, and the bust of a $300,000 operation last month delivered a very significant message.

“We have a strong focus on the prevention of the production, sale and distribution of all forms of illicit drugs and we will continue to do so.”
