Brothel float wins support

11th March 2010

Poll

Should the brothel be allowed to enter a float in the carnival parade?

This poll ended on 15 March 2010.
  • Yes
  • 51%
  • No
  • 48%

This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.

THE majority of voters in an online poll don’t agree with a decision to stop Toowoomba’s brothel owner entering a float in the Carnival of Flowers parade.

The Chronicle yesterday revealed Deviations owner Jim Welch’s plan to enter a float in this year’s parade to promote a “safe sex” message.

Mr Welch planned the float in conjunction with the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities.

The Prostitution Licensing Authority denied Mr Welch’s request, reportedly deeming it “inappropriate”.

Mr Welch had not approached the Toowoomba Regional Council about his plan.

54 per cent of voters (48 out of 88) said they disagreed with the PLA’s decision.

Using the promotion of 'Safe Sex' is a sly way of trying to get the brothel into the public via the carnival of flowers!
It seems that the chief purpose of the brothel is to make money out of women who are willing to sell their 'sex', and men who are willing to buy it. We shouldn't be promoting this on our streets.
Having a float for the brothel may help to promote 'safe sex', but that's certainly not all it would be promoting. I think it would be promoting sex in general, more than anything else.

People will think what they want to think in toowoomba unfortunetly regardless of what the truth may be, I doubt it would matter whether the brothel owner was wanting to promote "safe sex" as he states or promote prostitution! the majority of the people in toowoomba are so backwards thinking and stuborn when it comes to change in this town they will think what they want, say what they want and believe what they want regardless of the truth or this towns advances, its this way of thinking thats keeps our city from moving foward in any facet as a town. Im suprised to see the poll results as they are in favour of the brothels float so far, i voted yes to letting it enter, and NO i am not a patron of the brothel either i have no need to spend my money there but will still support the new business opportunities in this town to see it progress.

I have no problem with a brothel in Toowoomba, but must we have it out there. I believe the carnival will sink as I don't think many families will want to go down and try and explain to the kids what this float is all about.......safe sex . We've already had an 'Open Day' at the Brothel so we know all about it. We have sex education at school done in a appropriate way for the appropriate age groups, can we just leave it at that. I would like to know, what are the 'Workers' going to wear on the float, a business suite or the attire they wear when they are working??? What do we say to the kids......oh men go to Deviations for sex darling, I don't know and really I don't care but lets keep kids kids!!

HooRah the realist, I totally agree. Until this debate had arisen, the place had passed from memory. Let them march. Safe Sex is an issue that needs to be passed on to all, and with a major audience of impressionable people at the parade, if 1 hears the message, they have passed the test.

So ï ask the question of nickk and christie1501 and any one else with an opinion, if the government wanted to enter a "safe sex" float in the parade would you be against that aswel? or would you prefer nothing be advertised about safe sex just because you dont agree with the business name behind the float?

youidiot.......not insecure that isn't what I'm saying. Did you not read what I wrote. To me it's all about kids being kids. Must we put it in their faces. Leave it to the parents and schools...I think a parent knows when it's best to have the 'talk'. As for the schools they are educating the kids aswell.... therealist..... yes I would be against the government entering a 'safe sex' float. As mentioned by another reader would you be happy if they had a 'SUICIDE FLOAT' to educate people, lets face facts this would be just as important as 'Safe Sex'. Umm one more thing, would you just sit back with a smile across your face if your children/partner/girlfriend were to work for a place like this. Oh and to make it clear, happily single:-)

hahaha christie1501 yeh for sure, i understand where your coming from and understand why you wouldnt want this type of float in the parade.. its just taking 3 or 4 post's to get your point of view across, thats what this thing is for, so people can have their opinions heard, im certainly not speaking bout people being insecure or nething like that.. lol and it dosnt worry me whether ur single or have children, i agree with what your last post says 100%.. i just have no problem with there being a float like that parading or a suicide float parading aslong as they are done in a tactful fashion. and i would hardly expect there to be strippers hanging off the side of the float or anything of that nature, as for the suicide float you wouldnt see anything of a graffic nature (hangings ext) at all on these floats, i am unsure of how the organisers would advertise these issues but aslong as they were done properly i wouldnt mind. these are opinions no one is going to be rite or wrong, some people are just ignorant to the facts of some issues ( not saying you are! ) and as for the people who work in these places, its an individual preference, i know people working in this industry and they are succesful business people, people do it for all kinds of reason, selling urself for sex because u have no other way to live is unfortunate but in the very rarest cases would anyone like this be hired in a legalised brothel.

therealist, you are not the owner of this business are you? There are other ways to earn money....I am a full-time uni student and hold two casual jobs, I don't wish to resort to prostitution, and yes each to his own. Yes I guess I'm a bit of a prude:-) or maybe just a decent human being..... who knows... Anyway that is not the point I am making, LETS NOT HAVE IT IN OUR KIDS FACES (ages 3 - 10) are likely to ask questions, and what are you to say, Daddies and men go to Deviations for Safe Sex when they don't or can't or feel like a change from their partner for some sex sweetie.... Um if you don't want me to post a comment on this PLEASE don't post a comment re:christie1501:-) FINALLY - each to his own and what profession they choose but lets keep kids kids while we can..
