Relay set to beat cancer

9th February 2010

Staff of Westlawn Finance have banded together for the upcoming Relay For Life.

WITH just six weeks left to nominate a team for the 2010 Cancer Council Relay For Life, it is well and truly time to get organised and round up work colleagues and friends in the name of raising funds and awareness of cancer.

Last year 37 teams were involved in the event, and organisers hope to better that this year. With 21 teams already registered, that target is well with in reach.

One Clarence Valley business already on board is Grafton’s Westlawn Finance.

Leanne Cameron, one of the organisers within the office, said that after participating in the event last year she could not wait to be involved again.

“It is a really worthwhile experience. You meet people from other teams that have survived cancer and others who have cared for loved ones suffering from the disease,” she said.

“I lost my mum to cancer three years ago and almost all of the Westlawn employees have been touched by it in some way, so it really hits home, too.”

While 12 people from Westlawn have committed to walking laps of McKittrick Park, they have other fundraising events in the pipeline.

“We are all dressing in an Aussie bush theme for the event and will be selling billy tea and damper, and will be raffling off a barbecue in the lead-up to the event,” Leanne said. “We’ve also planned a monster garage sale that will go ahead on March 13.”

To register a team, call 6644 9206 or visit www.relay.cancercouncil.com.au.

The event will be held at McKittrick Park, South Grafton, on March 27 and will begin at 3pm with a survivors’ lap.

Early bird registration is $15 per person until March 19. Registrations from March 20 onwards are $20 per person.
