IT wasn't just Sunshine Coast beaches that were battered by Mother Nature yesterday – competitors in major ironman and triathlon events also did it tough.

At Alexandra Headland, the nation’s best beach competitors had to contend with vicious waves during the fourth round of the Kelloggs Nutri-Grain Ironman Series.

Things were no better further south, where competitors in the Caloundra Triathlon were regularly drenched by torrential downpours which made conditions treacherous.

The vicious conditions were whipped up by the same weather system which dumped monsoonal rain on the Gold Coast hinterland on Saturday night.

The conditions took their toll on some of the nation’s best competitors at the ironman event and the Caloundra Triathlon while only the brave or foolhardy took their chances at other beaches along the Coast.
