Rail workers protest assets sell-off

Maryborough rail workers and community members protested the planned sell-off of State Government assets at a meeting at Maryborough City Hall on Thursday night.
Unions fear the privatisation of railways, ports, roads and forests will threaten local jobs and regional economies.
Downer EDI staff are already facing an uncertain future after the State Government revealed it was calling for tenders from overseas contractors for its next order of Queensland Rail passenger trains.
Rail, Tram and Bus Union Wide Bay organiser Shayne Kummerfeld said a wide cross-section of community members attended the meeting to voice their opinions.
“The resolution was that we'll continue to fight and take it to the next election if need be,” he said. “We will take on the government over this.”
Mr Kummerfeld said Maryborough workers and businesses were already copping a pounding.
“The fuel subsidy has gone, there's a 20% increase in vehicle rego and a 15% jump in electricity expenses.
“Historically, privatisation of government assets means reduced services and higher charges for regional areas, because profits for shareholders become more important than providing a vital service.
“Privatisation also puts at risk thousands of rail jobs throughout Queensland.”
