Competition looks to be heating up

Chris Garry 4th July 2009

FIERCE struts, hair flicks and blue-steel looks were in abundance as Ipswich's modelling hopefuls 'worked it' at Booval hoping to be the next big thing.

During the past two days more than 120 youngsters aged from five to 19 competed in the Tamblyn Models Young Model Discovery event at Booval Shopping Fair.

The statewide competition gives Ipswich girls and boys the chance to become an international model.

John Porter, 19, was one of only a handful of males to take part.

Mr Porter was the competition's runner up in 2005 and this year again made it through to today's semi final.

Mr Porter hoped modelling fame would translate into female attention.

“I don't have a girlfriend, I'm definitely single, make sure you print that,” Mr Porter said with cheeky grin.

“I don't watch the Fashion Channel or anything like that, I did watch Make Me a Supermodel but that was because Jennifer Hawkins was on it.

“I like nice clothes and I like to look good but I'm not that into it.”

Last year's competition winner was Ipswich girl Nikita Russ, who landed a lucrative deal with New York modelling agency Ford Models after her triumph.

Sixteen-year-old Madilyn Wolens competed against Nikita in last year's final.

She returned this year and has also made it through to today's semi final.

“I love watching the Fashion Channel. I definitely want to be in the fashion industry,” Madilyn said. “I love the clothes and the whole atmosphere; it's very hard to get into though so I will have to work hard for it.”

Pam Tamblyn, CEO of Tamblyn Models, said there was great talent on show in Ipswich this year.

“After Nikita won last year, we expected a lot more quality entrants too, and that's what we've got,” Ms Tamblyn said.

The Ipswich final is held today from 10.30am at Booval Shopping Fair.
