TIME capsules were retrieved, parades were walked and historical dress-ups were worn as part Nambucca Heads Public School's 125th anniversary celebrations recently.

Students and teachers - past and present - and their families joined other community members at the school recently in a mammoth celebration weekend to mark more than a century since public education began in the area.

First up the entire school dressed up in period costumes for a parade through the main street of Nambucca to promote the weekend fete, while back at school Sandy Fenning's Year 3/4 class performed in a play specifically written about the history of the school. Saturday was the big day with the primary school fete.

There were stalls and historic displays and many ex-students spent time looking through old photo albums before enjoying the entertainment provided by the current primary school students.

Federal Member for Cowper Luke Hartsuyker and Nambucca Shire Council Mayor Rhonda Hoban were among the dignitaries who joined hundreds of other visitors at the fete and witnessed the retrieval of time capsules buried 25 years ago.

But it was catching up with old friends that seemed the most important part of the day and reunions continued into the evening at the dinner dance at Nambucca Heads RSL.

Principal Les McMahon said it couldn't have gone better.

“The weekend was a huge success and we'd like to thank everyone who helped in the organisation of the big event,” he said.
