Fire ravages home

CHARRED corrugated iron and a pile of ashes is all that remains of a Wallace Road home after it was destroyed by a fire on Saturday night.
Bundaberg Police said they were called to the Woongarra house about 8.10pm where the lone occupant, a 27-year-old woman, had raised the alarm after waking to the smell of smoke.
She was unable to extinguish the fire, which police said appeared to have started in a mattress.
It is understood the woman is the youngest daughter of the man who owns the home, and the owner is believed to be now staying with friends.
The woman was not seriously injured in the blaze, but was treated for smoke inhalation and transported by ambulance to Bundaberg Hospital.
Queensland Fire and Rescue Service Bundaberg station officer Ron Higgins said it was still unknown what caused the blaze.
“Our investigator is looking at it,” Mr Higgins said.
“It was fully involved on arrival so there was nothing we could do to save any part of the house and it burnt to the ground.”
He said three fire trucks and a water tanker attended the blaze, but problems with water availability hampered attempts to extinguish it.
Mr Higgins said the damage meant investigators were unable to determine if the home had a working smoke alarm.
Station officer Andrew McCracken said the home was about 50 or 60 years old, and had a white-ant problem which contributed to how quickly it was destroyed.
Bundaberg Police scenes of crime Senior Constable Ron Mientjes said the investigation had determined the fire was not suspicious.
“Obviously the owner is very upset,” he said.
The NewsMail understands the woman has been interviewed by police.
