MORE heavy rain and damaging winds are forecast for northern NSW for the remainder of Friday.

Large waves are also expected on the coast for the next 12 to 24 hours before the system weakens and moves away during Saturday.

Gusts in excess of 100 km/h were recorded from Evans Head and Ballina around 11pm Thursday as a small low crossed the coast.

Further wind gusts in excess of 90km/hr are still possible, especially along the coastal fringe.

Heavy rain has produced river rises throughout the region and Flood Warnings are now current for the Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond/Wilsons, Clarence, Orara, Bellinger, Macleay, Nambucca and Hastings Rivers. A Flood Watch remains current for all remaining coastal streams from the Queensland border to Port Macquarie.

Very large ocean waves and swell are occurring along the coast between the Queensland border and Port Macquarie.

Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.
