The Northern Star

THE NORTHERN Rivers has been declared a natural disaster zone as residents flee their homes, thousands remain without power, hundreds are left stranded by flood waters, and towns are shut down bracing for the worst.

Buildings, cars and caravans are submerged in metres of brown water across Lismore, while schools closed due to flooding and thousands escaped to higher ground.

Lismore's CBD and south were given the all clear this afternoon after the Wilsons River peaked at 10.4m and failed to break the levee bank.

But North Lismore's 500 residents were urged to stay away due to deep and fast-flowing flood waters.

In the 72 hours to midday today, 405mms of rain had drenched the North Coast accompanied by winds of up to 130km/hr.

More than 18,000 homes lost power.
