Northern NSW prepares for floods
20th May 2009
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) has issued warnings of severe weather and moderate to major flooding for people living between Nambucca and the Queensland border.
Flood watches are current for the Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond, Wilsons, Clarence, Bellinger and Nambucca rivers.
Eight helicopters are waiting at Casino and Coffs Harbour airports for any flood rescue and supply distribution operations required, NSW Emergency Services Minister Steve Whan says.
"People should remember that they should not drive, ride or walk through, or allow their children to play in, floodwaters, which can be very powerful, run fast and deep and contain hidden debris," he said.
Mr Whan advised homeowners to check their stormwater drains, roof gutters and downpipes are clear to prevent house damage.
"Farmers and other landholders should keep a watch on their streams and be prepared to move pumps, equipment and livestock to higher ground," he said.
It follows torrential rain causing havoc in south-east Queensland, causing flash flooding, landslides, blackouts and the closure of schools and roads.
A man was critically injured when a window imploded in a Gold Coast building during the downpour.
