Springborg fights for crucial seats

LNP Opposition leader Lawrence Springborg surveys the Mackay Marina after a seafood lunch - a short break during a day of non-stop campaigning.

LAWRENCE Springborg literally rolled into Airlie Beach yesterday, in a bus plastered with his image, fighting to win what are considered two “must win” seats in the Queensland election.

The man who would be premier offered three carrots to our region - a fistful of $12 million for the tourism industry, the promise of a $400,000 boat ramp at Constant Creek and a $250,000 expansion of the Rural Skills Centre in Sarina.

Hopping from the “Borg Express” and into a media scrum, where Premier Anna Bligh stood one hour earlier, Mr Springborg had the striking Whitsunday backdrop behind him as he made the first of his day's promises, pausing only to attack the Bligh Government.

Three hours later, after another quick trip on his bus to Proserpine Airport and an even quicker flight in a chartered jet, Mr Springborg was in Mackay meeting with the Volunteer Marine Rescue and unwrapping a plan for Constant Creek, about 30 minutes north of Mackay.

We are to be given at least one of the 40 boat ramps the Borg brigade promised on Saturday, when it pulled into Rockhampton.

The opposition leader said in Mackay that the new ramp topped Sunfish's list of wants and the $400,000 could be rolled out immediately, if the LNP won the March 31 election.

“We understand it's an extraordinary priority for Sunfish,” Mr Springborg said.

“And we're prepared to look at the East Point boat ramp too.”

Member for Mirani Ted Malone said the LNP would “put back” money made through the current Queensland Government's increased registration for boats.

“We want it to be put into giving boaties something for their money,” he said.

Sunfish president Lance Murray said he was “absolutely ecstatic” about the new project after years of lobbying government.

“I'm grateful, truly grateful,” Mr Murray said yesterday.

“(Constant Creek) is for mums and dads to go away and catch bread and butter fish.

“Thank goodness an election comes along to expedite the needs of the community.”

While the Sunfish president looks forward to the ramping up of government promises, a tourism boost from LNP would mean more than $100,000 for Mackay Tourism, on top of the $10 million earmarked to boost Queensland tourism marketing.

Mr Springborg said the 119,000 people employed in Queensland's tourism industry had been neglected by Premier Anna Bligh's policies.

“This money will go straight to the industry to determine how it can best be used, creating interest in Queensland and creating jobs,” he said.
