IPSWICH Diggers under-16 coach Adrian Suttie has encouraged his young team's creativity on the field.

After what he described as a performance filled with “youthful exuberance” in round one of the new state-wide Cyril Connell Cup, Suttie said he was happy for his team to try new things if they saw an opportunity.

“They're a bunch of very raw, talented boys,” Suttie said after his team beat Redcliffe last Saturday.

“They are always trying things.

“Probably a bit more 'creative' than what they see on the NRL.

“A lot of NRL play is very much playing to a pattern.

“And while we do too, the way I coach if they see something they go for it.

“So probably a bit more flair.

“It's not always going to come off, but I'm not going to come down on them like a tonne of bricks.

“The whole idea of my coaching is to try and get them into situations and teach them how to handle it.”

Despite a somewhat scrappy round one performance in the wet, Suttie saw enough positives to hint at better things to come.

Meanwhile, it gave him plenty to work on for Friday's game.

“We're still learning how to be proficient around the ruck,” he said.

“We also need to be more patient in attack, which is why we had a lot of dropped ball.

“If we had of been more patient we could have scored a lot more (against Redcliffe).”

Ipswich's clean sweep in the under 16s and 18s put them in a good position ahead of Friday's clash with Easts, who were beaten in both grades last week by the Gold Coast.

Only a few minor changes will be made to the under-16 side with Geoffrey Broome out with a shoulder injury and Suttie opting to rest prop Jordan Harris.

Helaman Samuela will come off the bench to take the number 10 jersey.

Jason Hall and Joshua Horne will make their debuts wearing 15 and 17 respectively.

“Everything we think we had concerns with we got right with the first 17,” Suttie said.

“We've got a couple coming in through forced replacements, but those coming in I'm confident will all hold their own.”

Both Ipswich teams travel to Langlands Park to take on Easts Tigers on Friday night.

The 16s will kick off at 6pm followed by the 18s at 7.30pm.
