QUEENSLAND pet shops will be encouraged to abide by a new code of conduct designed to lower the numbers of unloved pets.

Primary Industries Minister Tim Mulherin announced on Wednesday a new voluntary code of practice had been drawn up to ensure animals only went to suitable homes.

It will ensure all cats and dogs are desexed before reaching breeding age and microchipped, he said.

Prospective owners would also be talked through the responsibilities of pet ownership and whether a pet matched that person's lifestyle.

"The problem of unwanted pets is a serious one, especially with Christmas fast approaching," Mr Mulherin said.

"This is a time when people often buy pets as presents, only to abandon them when the novelty wears off."

He said the new code, developed with the RSPCA and other animal and industry groups, would be mailed to Queensland pet shops.

"Dumped pets can become feral and do untold environmental damage," he said.

"Not only will this code help reduce animal suffering, it will also help protect our lifestyle and environment."
