Speeding drivers are slow to learn

SIXTY-SEVEN speeding tickets were issued as part of Operation Slowdown, conducted by police in the Richmond Local Area Command over the long weekend.

Out of 1115 random breath tests, only six drink-drivers were arrested, and six tickets were issued to people for not wearing seatbelts. Police said 28 other traffic-related infringements were issued.

Tweed/Byron police caught 32 drink-drivers over the long weekend.

They also reported 61 speeding offences and 20 seatbelt offences in the region.

P-platers and one learner driver were among those caught drink-driving as police carried out 1632 breath tests across the Tweed-Byron region. The blood-alcohol limit for learner and probationary drivers is zero.

One young driver returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.10 in Murwillumbah on Saturday night.
